Winery Erich Machherndl, Wachau, Austria

New wave Wachau

Erich and Karin Machherndl unite the tradition passed down through the generations with forward-thinking progress. They marry the wealth of experience & contemporary interpretation, wooden vats & stainless steel tanks. The journey went from traditional wine farming, then to conventional viticulture and now back to the roots with organic viticulture.

The vineyards are free from herbicides and synthetic fertilizers since 2007. They expedite balance and low vegetation and long for organic certification for all wines, effective from the 2018 vintage. This form of viticulture enables them to create a valuable habitat with the highest possible biodiversity throughout their vineyards; many insects and butterflies, blossom, grasses, herbs and shrubs, with a tree here and there. Biodiversity is our motto, along with a lively nature.

The wines originate from eight hectares of vineyards that are soon to become organically certified. Alongside the signature varieties of Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, they also grow Pinot Gris, Yellow Muscat and even Syrah.

Careful hand-picking of the healthy grapes allows for skin maceration. The must rests with the skins and stems in ambient conditions until the desired intensity is achieved, and the must develops complex and more intense aromatic characters.

Grapes are pressed gently (max. 0.8 bar); fermentation of the wine, depending on the desired style of wine, takes place spontaneously; they are left on the skins and bottled without clarification. Alternatively, wines are fermented with own yeast selection and clarify. Generally, they do not fine the wines, and only add minimal Sulphur prior to bottling. Some wines are bottled unfiltered
