The Weinberghof of the Fritsch family has been the driving force for quality in the Wagram region for decades. Karl’s father always believed in the potential of Grüner Veltliner as a high-class variety and launched the first initiative for wine of quality in 1989 while simultaneously making Fritsch the epitome of wine from the Wagram. Fritsch senior was also was a forerunner for international grape varieties. Both father and son see the Wagram as a versatile region which allows for a wide range of vines to give good results. Despite this, it is undoubtedly clear that Grüner Veltliner, which accounts for one third of all area under cultivation, along with Riesling and Zweigelt are the uncontested main varieties. Pinot Noir is a “matter of the heart”-wine for Karl, in which he can show his skills. His efforts have been rewarded with the title “Falstaff Vintner of the Year 1997”. Karl Fritsch respects the terroir of the Wagram on his 20 hectares through biodynamic cultivation and in the composition of chosen grape varieties. Respect for nature and man, transparency, creativity and open mindedness have led to a unique style. The Fritsch wines are straightforward, crisp and elegant with a down to earth character which reflects not only the terroir of the Wagram, but also the personality of their creator. This applies to the fruit-driven classic medium-bodied regional blends of the Wagram range as well as the mineral, complex single-vineyard Veltliners Mordthal, Steinberg and Schlossberg, the Pinot Noir “P” and the Cuvée Foggathal.
