Winery Gesellmann

With its 28 hectares of vineyards on loamy, gravelly hills surrounding Deutschkreutz, Weingut Gesellmann is small enough to keep every single grape under control. And big enough not to be forced to use every one of them. The luxury of "selection" is the fundamental basis for the best wines. In some of the vineyards, selection takes care of itself, since the vines are over eighty years old and produce only minimal yield. 90% of the vineyards are reserved for blue grapes.
In old deeds, the estate was first mentioned in 1767, but it attained its peak when Engelbert Gesellmann planted international varieties in the mid-1980s and experimented with aging in barrique casks. The more often Engelbert Gesellmann and his son Albert traveled through other winegrowing regions, the more they learned to appreciate the individuality of their own region. Since 1986, they have been growing the single-vineyard Blaufränkisch Creitzer wine, providing an optimal illustration of subtle fruitiness of Middle Burgenland. With the Cuvées Opus Eximium (1988) and Bela Rex (1992), Gesellmann proved the potential of his international style red wines – and caused a sensation.
With the powerful Cuvée "G”, which is 90% Blaufränkisch, and the Blaufränkisch “hochberc”, wines with particularly tight structure and extraordinary mineral character, the Gesellmanns have built lasting monuments to their favorite variety. All Gesellmann wines are aged in wooden casks. Two overall wins of the prestigiuos FALSTAFF Red Wine Award in 2008 with 2006 hochberc and in 2011 with 2009 Bela Rex give testimony of the superb quality of the Gesellmann wines.
